Linguistics and Phonetics Research Experience Scheme

Transcribing experiments involving children

As part of a project researching the effect of bilingualism and socio-economic status on the linguistic and cognitive development of young children, we are looking for 4 helpers to transcribe the audio data from two linguistic experiments.

These experiments test whether children will use a pronoun or a full noun phrase to describe a scene, which the experimenter who is sitting at the other side of a partition needs to replicate with her playmobils.  The first picture is described by a pre-recorded voice (e.g. below “The girl’s cake has been baked by a teacher”).   The child is asked to describe the second picture for the experimenter to replicate.

You will be transcribing all the child’s productions using CLAN, the easy-to-use editor available through the CHILDES project.

You will be trained and supervised by Sanne Berends, who is the research assistant on this project.  If you would like to read more about it, please look at our website.

Project dates: to start as soon as possible.
Time commitment: 10 hours minimum.
Deadline for applications: applications will be considered weekly (on Wednesdays), starting 12th of February 2014.
Notification of success: Thursday each week until all positions have been filled.
