Nick Smithson, Planning Officer ,City Development, Leeds City Council
Nick’s first experience of the public sector was working for Transport for London for a year in between undergraduate and postgraduate study. Having concluded his postgraduate diploma in Town Planning, Nick worked briefly in the private sector for a national planning, development and property consultancy, before taking a role on the Leeds City Council graduate training scheme in October 2012. Nick’s first placement on the scheme was with the City Council’s Forward Planning and Implementation service, working on strategies to shape the built environment until 2028. Nick was fortunate enough to be offered a position with this team after 6 months, and has so far represented the Council publically at formal planning hearings, and on the ground at many events with local community representatives.
The graduate training scheme has afforded Nick a great deal of opportunities and training, including the chance to be involved with mentoring colleagues who are new to the organisation. This has so far given him a rewarding, interesting and diverse start to his career.
